History of the University of North Carolina

The University of North Carolina was chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly on December 11, 1789. At that time the founder of this university was William Richardson Davy. It is one of three universities in the United States that claim to be the oldest public university. This university was the only degree-granting public institution in the eighteenth century.
